Buzz Interviews Maisha Hagan of Beauty & the Boss, LLC

In my previous job I had an amazing boss who allotted me the freedom and flexibility to branch out into areas of personal passion. So, even though I was a marketing director for a construction company, I also spoke at conferences and ran a mentorship program for four years. That eventually led to coaching individuals and strategic consulting with small businesses. Fast forward to November of 2018 and after a season of personal transition and reflection, I decided to resign from my job and pursue coaching full time.

In 2019 I created Beauty & the Boss, LLC, a career coaching and professional development company for women in male-dominated industries. As the owner and head coach, my mission is to help women learn strategic soft-skills and strategically position themselves for career growth.
At the individual level, I provide quality content and one-on-one coaching, but I also partner with companies and professional associations that have Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

Blogging was something that I had always been interested in. I started writing poetry when I was about 7, to
express my feelings. As I got older, I started writing about more complex topics and things I was experiencing in detail. I started blogging to take the stigma off of mental health, infertility, and life challenges in general. I wanted my blog to change people’s perspectives on that. My intention was always to create a safe place and to let people know that we’re all struggling or have experienced hardships and that’s okay. It doesn’t make you weak. I noticed that through my transparency, I was beginning to reach people. Some were people I knew, some I didn’t, but I would receive messages or comments on my posts from people with similar experiences.

I have been drawing since I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade, I started off drawing stick man then I started put swords in there hands and started filling in there whole bodies. I was big on Kung Fu movies, I believe if I meditated long enough that I would be able to fly into tree like they did in the films. My cousin Ken was a great artist, me and him spent a lot of time drawing pictures and other kids at my elementary school was real good artist, this all influence me to continue to work on my art from elementary throughout high school, drawing Ninja Turtles, Marvel Comic characters and whatever influence me from my neighborhood. In High School I won a few art ribbons and got paid to design a school screenplay cover. After I graduated from Langston University in 2004 , I was working at Walgreens, around 2005, 2006 one of my fraternity brother ask me to invest in a party, this was my first club promotion event with 97.9 and Lil Joe, he was the headliner, he had a hot single called I Can Do This. After promoting this first event, I started promoting my own events and started working at a few different club spots. After doing several events one of my promoter friends, that was doing teen parties at the time, give me the first adobe software program and show me the basic on how to use it. At this time I was still working at Walgreens and working at a few clubs, I was just getting into bartending, I bartended on Tuesdays and Sundays at a spot called The Ice Barr in Downtown Dallas and my Bar manager Twon was my first paid Graphic client, he paid me to do a flyer for his event his was putting on. I was from Bartending a the Hottest Open Mic in the city, Tuesday nights at the Ice Barr with my partner Mr. Nike to becoming the host of the event to helping him with promotion of the night, Me and Mr. Nike was passing out 10,000 flyers in a few days. Mr. Nike was plug in with a lot of big name national artist, this is where I pick up my first camera, I purchase it from Walgreens and I was working as his camera man, this started me with Camera work. Like with Graphic Designs, I have always been a creative story teller, which got me trouble when I was younger because I was drawing and creating comic books plus some of the material was inappropriate for my age. When my camera and laptop got stolen in Austin at my friend’s wedding, another friend at the time invested in me by purchasing me a new camera and laptop and I have been making movies and creating graphics and website designs every since.

I started doing photography in around tenth grade basically just to take pictures for family events or for travel. People kept telling me I had a gift so I decided to pick it up more throughout highschool. By my senior year, I had started my own business and gotten many inquiries for graduations, weddings, etc. I went to college and then my business really started kicking! I built my own website, booking site, Instagram, portfolio, etc. and was having up to three shoots per week! Some of my work has been published in magazines and online publications and I have become an official photographer for various organizations!

Creating art was always a desire of mine. I experimented with many kinds but constantly came back to writing, mainly poems. And then directing came along and I knew I found the things I’m supposed to do.
During my military service in the Israeli army, I had a folder on my computer with hundreds of poems. One day my commander told me he saw it and read a few. I was worried he might get angry, but instead he showed interest in them. I was an Operation Sergeant in the West Bank, so it wasn’t like he was expecting to find that.

I studied Communications in undergrad and majored in visual content. During that time, it became incredibly clear to me that I need to study film. I began writing stories and found my voice, but I wasn’t ready to make the move to LA just yet. So, after graduating I worked in the Israeli news covering war and terror among everyday issues, and on documentaries that dealt with terror attacks in Israel. It was extremely interesting, but I realized it wasn’t what I really wanted to do. That time, however, left its mark on me and it is why I write so much about terror and war today.

Something broke inside of me during the Tzuk Eitan war in 2014. Writing was my relief. My short film ‘Something to Live For’ was inspired by that. The film revolves around a pregnant Palestinian woman whose husband died in the Israeli prison. With the help of Hamas, she plans a terror attack to revenge his death. The premature birth of her baby makes her reconsider, but will Hamas let her off the hook?

I moved to LA at 27 years old and got my masters at USC but went back to Israel in the summer of 2018 and shot the film with a talented Israeli and Arab crew and cast. It was a rough and beautiful experience. The film screened in prestigious festivals around the world and now I’m working on the feature version.

I unknowingly started in the event planning industry when I was 12, helping my older sister set-up for her events. The first event that really started it all for us was her wedding. I mainly helped because I wanted to hang out with my sister and if that meant having to help her choose between the hundreds of shades of purples, I was willing to go along with the crazy. This went on to help her plan social events like birthdays, bridal showers, and Christmas parties. The planning came really easy for us and we used that time together to bond as sisters, dragging along our entire family including my two other sisters, my brother, and our parents. Other families may dread putting together elaborate parties a few times a year, however, it became a routine for us and something we looked forward to every month or so:

• Hazel created the overall theme and concept of the event
• Cheryl handled the DIY projects
• Dad built any structure that came out of our imagination
• Mae planned the food and beverages served
• I planned the program such as games, raffles and became the MC for the night
• John did the pick-ups and drop-offs
• Mom kept us fed and looked after the kids
• And any other “member” would just help out with set-up/cleanup

We didn’t realize the “legacy” of our event planning would be a hit. And word spread of our crazy $10,000 parties for one-year-olds.

The skills that I developed helping my sister trickled down to my personal life in school, helping set-up dances, shows and even hosting my own themed parties. At the age of 18, my family presented me with a choice, a new car or a huge 18th birthday party. Well, I’m sure you know what I chose. After high school, I wasn’t able to help my sister as much and decided to follow a different path. I studied Journalism, Communication, and Public Relations. After college, I got into Business Development and Project Management. Although my endeavors had some excitement, I was having trouble finding something that filled the “happiness” checkbox. I eventually really enjoyed working for small businesses, being able to develop processes and creating operations from the ground up, but I couldn’t find the industry that felt like home.

During this time, I was still being asked by friends and family to help host their events and even hosted a few corporate events within the companies I worked for. It wasn’t until I was being offered payment for my work that really made me think. I was being complimented on work that I did on my own without my family and it was good enough to have a price tag. I went back and forth with the idea of creating an event planning business mainly because I doubted if others would see the value in my work without knowing who I was. My family had made a reputation back in my hometown in San Jose but now that I was living on my own in Los Angeles, I wasn’t sure if I was able to build that same reputation so quickly. I also was getting married and planning to start a family so financially I wasn’t sure if it was the right time. I put the idea in the back burner.

With a few months left until the wedding day, I went through an epic break-up that left me feeling like I was going to lose myself into depression and turmoil. The empty checkbox I had next to the word happiness was almost impossible to see. With literally the last bit of motivation I had, a few weeks after, I launched my event planning website on April 6, 2018. Because of my will to not give up, I unknowingly pushed myself towards the path I was eventually destined to do.

I have always been pretty athletic. I grew up in a home where my siblings and I played multiple sports, and my dad was a bodybuilder. Health and fitness was always part of my lifestyle. So, fast forward to me being pregnant with my first child. I bought into the “eat for two” advice and really packed on the pounds. I tipped the scale at 230 lbs and gained 70 lbs during my pregnancy. Fortunately I was still walking daily, and even with the large weight gain I didn’t have the pregnancy complications like preeclampsia like a lot of women experience. On the day of my birthday my water broke, and the next day I gave birth to my amazing daughter.

Life after giving birth was a whirlwind. One day my husband and I were out running errands, and I blacked out and found myself in the back of an ambulance being rushed to the ER. I was suffering from exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and dehydration. I had not been taking care of myself or eating right, and it caught up with me.

This scary experience was a wake up call. How could I be a great mom to my daughter if I was not taking care of myself? When my doctor gave me the green light to start exercising, I put everything that I knew into practice. I exercised and put myself on a daily meal plan. No more mindless eating and consuming thousands of calories day. I lost all of the weight, and then some, in 11 months and looked vibrant and healthy. I felt so much better, but I was still dealing with digestive problems.

Some days were more severe than others. I would get really painful stomach cramps after eating certain foods. I experienced bloating, and I felt really uncomfortable and sluggish. I started trying to self diagnose. Maybe I had a gluten sensitivity? Is it a digestive disorder? I tried so many over the counter products, eating gluten free, etc. It still didn’t help.

One night when I was feeling miserable and could not sleep, I was looking on my laptop and came across a documentary called Vegucated. As I watched it I was so intrigued and appalled. Why had I never known about veganism before? The animal cruelty footage had me devastated when I realized what happened to animals behind the scenes before they made it to my plate. After seeing the documentary I became vegan overnight and never looked back.

I have always loved to read and research information. The more I read about veganism, animal rights, health benefits, and much more I knew I wanted to share my story and inspire others. This is how The Sensible Vegan was born! Within three weeks of becoming vegan the health issued disappeared. I have not had the cramps or digestive issues ever since.

I created a blog to share recipes, product reviews, and vegan information. I also publishedmy first very children’s book, and it love to attend vegan festivals and events and sharing my story.

I purchased my first DSLR camera in 2010 for my photojournalism course. There, I learned a lot about lighting and manual shooting. After the semester, I didn’t really pick up my camera up “professionally” until around 2014, for graduation shoots. It wasn’t until 2019 that I decided to purchase another camera and starting doing maternity sessions. In order to build up my portfolio, I was doing a lot of free shoots to try to build a clientele up. One year later, a hobby of mine has turned into a small business. I owe it all to those who refer me, support me and constantly motivate me.
