Meet Jalia Pettis of 3Jay Productions
My story is a testimony of perseverance and passion. I have always had an interest in entrepreneurship however my career began in retail management which quickly shifted to working in human resources. I worked my way up through the ranks into a leadership role. However that wasn’t enough for me, I kept applying for various promotions but was tired of always adding skills yet hitting a brick wall. So I decided it was time to do something I enjoyed which involved fashion and talent management. I had attained experience in these areas at a young age by being in front of the camera. It became second nature so much so that it turned into a part-time job. I juggled a full-time career and a part-time passion for several years. That passion birthed a business called 3Jay Productions. Five years after it’s inception I quit a full-time job with benefits to move across the country. Of course most people thought I had lost my mind, little did I know this was going to be one of the best decisions not only for me personally but also for my budding business. That was eight years ago and I’ve created a brand that is thriving.
3Jay Productions is a multi-faceted B2C and B2B that caters to those in the beauty fashion and entertainment industries.
The road has definitely not been easy. I had to learn to separate business from personal relationships, it was a very tough lesson! One that cost me multiple personal relationships and almost dismantled my business. I had lost my zeal because I was giving a lot more than I was receiving and it depleted every bit of my mental and emotional energy. Through this struggle it taught me a lot about the importance of networking and building a strong team.
3Jay Productions is based in Phoenix, Arizona but also travels to California and Nevada. When you think about what goes on behind the scenes as it relates to producing a marketing campaign, images that you see in a magazine or the crew that works on set for film and television that’s where we come in. We connect the dots and provide a variety of services to include creative direction, art direction, event planning/management, casting assistance, hair styling, makeup artistry, wardrobe styling, project and brand management, business development and HR consulting. The fact that we are a true one stop shop is what sets us apart. We are a small team so our clients whether they’re individuals or midsize organizations get a very personal touch. The last couple of years we’ve had some really great accolades that we are very proud of. In 2018 we were awarded the American Small Business Championship for the State of Arizona through SCORE and in 2019 we were listed as one of the Top 40 minority-owned businesses in Phoenix, AZ. As the Visionary I have my own accomplishments which I attribute to being an overall Entrepreneur.
I define success by setting goals and absolutely crushing them! I used to cut myself a lot of slack and was afraid to pay myself on the back. I no longer do that but I do hold myself and my business to a high standard. I cannot give someone a service that I wouldn’t want. So that means my professionalism has to be top notch, the quality has to be top notch and I have to do something to ensure that I not only retain but rebook whomever my customer is. It’s also a plus when they are willing to refer me to others. All of these are measurements to achieving success.
